FAQ

What kinds of batteries are being collected in this program?

BATTERYCYCLE accepts most common household batteries – AAA, AA, C, D, 9V and button.  Cell phone, laptop and car batteries will not be accepted due to capacity concerns and processing costs.  The Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation already has a number of sites throughout the Ottawa area that accept rechargeable batteries, including Canadian Tire stores, The Source by Circuit City stores, The Home Depot and other retail outlets.  You can find out more information about recycling rechargeable batteries at www.rbrc.org.

Where do the batteries go?

Batteries collected will be sent to the Raw Materials Company (RMC) – the only licensed battery reclamation company based in Ontario. At its facility in Port Colborne, RMC recycles 30 million pounds of batteries per year, recovering 100% of the materials in the batteries.

Why only Grade 4 to 8?

For logistical reasons the pilot program has been kept to elementary and middle schools. Grades below Grade 4 were excluded to ensure that all participants would be able to carry the weight of a full battery bucket.

Why wasn’t the school in my area chosen?

For the pilot program only 51 schools can participate.

BATTERYCYCLE consulted both the public and separate school boards about school selection.  Schools participated on a “first-come” voluntary basis.

BATTERYCYCLE expects to expand the program to all school for the 2009-10 school year.

Will this program be a permanent means of collecting batteries for the City of Ottawa?  Will it replace other collection sites?

The BATTERYCYCLE program is not intended to replace any programs currently operated by the City, nor will it operate on a year-round basis. The City of Ottawa is simultaneously launching their own battery recycling initiative, an ambitious partnership with libraries and retail locations across the city.
